Running Your Ad

Review denominational, regional, and general religious publications to determine where to advertise. Call these publications and request a rate sheet, information about rates for repeat ads, and ad deadlines. The lead time to get an ad published may be several months. At any point in your search, you can rerun or modify the ad. In monthly magazines, because of the lead time, the same ad will typically run for several months. In weekly magazines, running the same ad every week for several months is costly, and you might get better responses by placing ads intermittently. Neither the readership nor the interest of pastors changes that much from week to week.

Don’t forget to update your ad as necessary. If you indicate in the ad that you will have a church profile ready by a certain date, update the ad by that date. Failing to do so can indicate to readers that you have not received any responses to your initial ad, that you are out of touch with what your ad says, that you are not attentive to details, or that the search process might be difficult.

It is exciting to serve on a pastoral search committee and to see how many wonderful men and women God has prepared to lead the church. As you hear about them through your sources and read their profiles, you will be blessed. The next step is to make contact with the pastors.
