Chapter 19.

The sun was getting low in the sky as the last of the logs were loaded onto the wagons. The two teams of horses that had been pulling the now destroyed wagons were hitched to makeshift sledges that were loaded with more logs and tied to the back of the wagons. I waited for the last wagon to move out before turning to scan the woods. A group of elves stood at the edge of the forest watching us go. I hoped they were happy enough with the offerings. It was something that our party were going to have to bring up with the elder of the village before we left.

The journey back was uneventful, and we arrived at the gates just as the sun finally fled below the horizon. The walls were lined with torches, which shed enough light that we had no issues bringing the logs into the village ready to be prepared for the new palisade.

No sooner than we had dismounted and retrieved our belongings, one of the villagers at the inn took our horses. That was odd, but not that out of the ordinary. They weren’t our horses, after all. We entered the inn and were assailed by noise and smells from food and beer. There were more people in here than we had seen before. I assumed it had something to do with the trip we had been on. I headed straight upstairs to put my pack and accoutrements away. Once I was done I waited in the corridor for the others. They appeared quickly, presumably having just done exactly the same thing I had it seemed.

“Shall we have a chat with the village elder?”

“That would probably be best. He should know why the tributes weren’t paid,” Findetla replied.

Thrama nodded in agreement, and we headed downstairs into the cacophony of noise. We had to use elbows and some judicious sidestepping to make our way to the bar. The innkeeper came over to us as soon as he noticed we were there.

“How did today go? I heard there was some trouble with a group in the forest.”

“You could say that, I suppose. Is the village elder around?” I asked, scanning the room.

“No, he has retired for the night. I suspect he will want to meet with you first thing in the morning to be able to sort out your fee. Speaking of payment, here are some beers.”

He produced three ales from a shelf just under the bar.

“It’s the good stuff, so go slow on it,” he said with a wink, and then headed off to find other patrons that needed serving.

“Well, there isn’t much more that we can do here tonight,” I said, picking up a mug of ale. The others followed suit.

“Chin up,” Thrama said and started to drain his mug. Findetla took a small sip, and then screwed her face up. I tasted the ale and was impressed. It was strong, but I had drunk dwarven ale and survived. Findetla slid hers over to Thrama right as his now empty mug landed on the bar.
