Ťvandalized, some fishing nets were cut, and two small boats were set ablaze. Still, though it gave little warning of the horrors that would come later, this minor mischief represented the beginning of our strange conflict with the people ofLonSer. Over the year, the ferocity of the attacks’ increased steadily. At Woodsrest in Tobyn’s Wood, a bit more than a half-year after Valani, the first homes were destroyed. A half-year after that, in the village ofSem, a man and his young son became the first of our people to die at the hands of invaders in over four hundred years. At Taima, only a few weeks later, an entire village square was razed, and, of course, with the brutal attacks on Kaera and Watersbend, the violence of the outlanders’ campaign reached its most appalling level.

Fortunately, Watersbend also marked the end of their attacks—there is no telling how much more devastating the next incidents might have been, although it is hard to imagine them being much worse. Still, though the attacks enaed over four years ago, the scars that they left on our land remain fresh and painful…. It remains to be seen whether our grief and anger can become posi’tive forces for change and renewed vigilance, or whether we will merely allow these emotions to fester and grow into something as dark as the violence that provoked them. —From Section Two of ‘The Report of Owl-Master Baden on his Interrogation of the Outlander Baram,” Submitted to the 1,014th Gathering of the Order of Mages and Masters.
