Chapter 20
As she wrapped her arms around my neck, pulling me down to her, I felt a comfort that I hadnât felt in so long. I hesitated, the words sheâd spoken before running rampant inside of my head. Sheâd screamed at me not to touch her, and Iâd complied. All I wanted was her happiness.
Now, as I melted into her, I couldnât help but feel the beat of my heart speed up to a level that was very nearly painful. Iâd craved her touch for so long that it had become like a scar, marring the inside of me until I wondered if I could even feel at all, though now it turned out that I could.
This Eden was not the same. She was headstrong, stubborn, and much more serious than the one I had lost in a rural Louisiana town. She was a different side of the same coin, and even despite her differences, it wasnât hard for me to love her.
The truth was, I would never stop. Even if she forced me away, I wouldnât be able to stop what my heart wanted, and it wanted her. Even if we werenât together, even if she never loved me the way I did her, simply being at her side, seeing her smile, and hearing the music of her voice would keep my head above water.
I wanted to be near her, even if only her friend. Being her friend was better than not having her at all, no matter how badly, how desperately I wanted more.
Finally, she began to pull away, and it took all of my willpower just to let her go. I pulled back, fighting the pain, but that smile chased away any clouds that had overtaken me.
That smile was my lifeline, and I was hooked.
Near the doorway, Shadow had begun his sniffing routine, and I pointed it out to her with a nod of my head.
âLookâs like your alarmâs about to go off again,â I said, huffing a laugh.
âOh, right.â Moving to the door, she scooped him up just as it seemed he had found a likely spot to be his new bathroom. Moving out the door, she turned at the last second, looking expectantly towards me. âCome with me?â
My heart skipped a beat as I stepped away from the counter, moving to the front of the kitchen with barely a nod of the head. She was acting friendly because she felt guilty, and though I knew it, I couldnât help but wonder how long it would be before she changed her mind again.
Following her up the stairs, I moved carefully along beside her, my mind working a million miles an hour in the back of my head. Just last night, when Iâd come in from butchering my kill, I could have sworn I heard her crying in her room. Iâd assumed the worst, only to be proven wrong the next morning. It was confusing, dizzying, but at this point, I was simply along for the ride.
