GETTING AN EDGE—DECREASING YOUR TIPPET DIAMETER WHILE INCREASING ITS LENGTH

While you can decrease drag by increasing the length of your tippet or by using a Harvey leader, you can accomplish the same thing by decreasing the diameter of your tippet. This increases the flexibility between the fly and the fly line—a lighter spring between the caboose and the last car. One disadvantage of going to a smaller diameter is that you lose breaking strength. Another is that you may have trouble straightening a fly with some air resistance. But with a small fly that is not very air-resistant, with calm winds, you can switch to both a lighter and longer tippet. I’d say that when using a size 14 dry fly, going from a 2-foot 4X tippet to a 4-foot 5X tippet will dramatically increase your chances of catching rising fish under difficult conditions by about 30 percent.
