McGANNED

Bert and Hanks parked the car in space the closest to the shamrock-adorned McGann Auto Parts store, which boasted to be the number one auto parts store in Chicago. Bert stayed back on Hank's orders.

Officer Hanks walked into the store and noticed the usual row upon row of shelving and more shamrock-adorned signs marked what each aisle offered.

Hanks did not concern himself with the shelving and looked around for a managerial office which he assumed would be in the back of the store. He made his way through the interior accessories section towards the door that most likely led to a stockroom and an office.

Hanks entered without batting an eye. His Salem badge ready, he surveilled the back room.

It was full of boxes, and roughly the same size as the retail space in the front of the building. No one bothered him. No one seemed to be around. A door marked 'Store Manager' was cracked. Hanks knocked on the door but his knock also forced the door open. This room was empty too.

"This store is open for business right?" Hanks wondered.

"Who da hell are you? What da hell a'ya doin' back here?" a man with a thick Chicago accent yelled.

Hanks looked towards an open loading door. A truck just pulled away. A large man with silver hair walked towards him.

"Mr. McGann? I am Officer Hanks." Hanks flashed his badge quickly, hoping to avoid the Salem legitimacy issue.

"Oh shit, what da hell happened? Was it my idiot son? What'd he do? Jack McGann." The man held his hand out for Hanks to shake.

Hanks shook his hand, "Just had a few questions to ask you about your son's teacher. As far as I know your son is innocent of any wrongdoing."

"Which one? Dat idiot physics teacher?" McGann walked into his office where he offered Hanks a seat.

Hanks noted McGann's frankness about his feelings towards Hurley.

"I did hear from fellow teachers that you and Hurley had a contentious relationship."

"Not contentious from his side. I will admit I was da one pissed off most a'da time. Robbie gets straight As his whole frick'n life until dat class wit Hurley. I may have tried to pull my weight a bit since I donate a lot to the Dad's club and da school's booster club. What happened ta Hurley dat your here?"

"Mr. Hurley was murdered."

McGann's jaw dropped. "And you think I had somethin' to do wit' it? I may have a hot temper but I don't kill people."

Hanks knew from McGann's reaction that the business owner did not murder Hurley. Hanks also knew he had to pursue leads quickly and didn't want the hassle of involving the Chicago PD.

Hanks knew Hurley was poisoned with anti-freeze. It seemed all too cute for the begrudged parent to go to such great lengths to murder a teacher with their own product but the kid might overlook those details.

"Where is Robbie if I may ask? He still at school?" Hanks pressed.

"He just left last night for a school trip actually to Europe and North Africa, a Roman Empire tour with his history teacher.
