Chapter 9 – Fire Watch Reports

Atop the Houston skyscraper, the Hunter took the speaker. “Thank you,” he said. “Sorry for the ruse, but I needed to talk with you.”

“How do you know you didn’t pull me away from something important?” Valkyr asked and folded her arms over her chest.

The Hunter tapped his left ear. “Police band is quiet, and there haven’t been any reported sightings of you for the last hour.” He shrugged. “I didn’t know any other way to get your attention.”

"Well, you have it now," Valkyr said. "mind telling me what this is all about?”

The Hunter nodded. “I’m the Hunter. I’m with the US Department of SuperHuman Activities. We saw your work at the bank, and we wanted to make contact.”

The armored superhuman pointed at Mindwave. “And who is she?”

The Hunter turned and waved the young woman forward. “This is Mindwave. She’s a member of the DSHA response team, the Operators.” Mindwave offered a small wave.

“And you want me to join this team?” Valkyr asked.

“We want to know what kind of person you are,” the Hunter said. “You stopped a bank robbery and saved the hostages from a bomb. That’s admirable. It looks like you’re using your powers to help people, but there are laws around superhumans and the DSHA needs to make sure you’re following them.”

Valkyr offered a bitter grin. “You want to make sure I’m not faking it.”

“They just want to make sure you’re one of the good guys.” Mindwave said. “They do it for everybody.”

The armored woman looked at Mindwave more closely and examined her with senses beyond those of humans. “Did they bring guns when they first met you? Or were they a little friendlier?”

Mindwave looked at her, then winced and rubbed the side of her head. “When I first met the Operators, there were seven of them on the team. The Hunter, Granite, Talon, Mister Dusk, and a few more that I don’t remember.” She looked at the Hunter. “I’m sorry.”

“It’s OK,” the Hunter said.

“That’s a lot of people for one little girl,” Valkyr said.

Mindwave sneered at her, and the air around them grew heavy. She lifted off the ground, her emotional control overwhelmed and her telekinetic powers let loose. “I was in a cage. I was experimented on, tortured, along with a hundred other superhumans,” she said, and her voice echoed in their minds.

“Mindwave,” the Hunter said. “take it easy.”

The young telepath ignored him. “We were sold into slavery. Cheap labor, personal assistants, even the sex trade. If it wasn’t for the Hunter and the Operators, I’d be in a sex parlor in Africa servicing Johns, and if I refused, I’d be electrocuted or worse.”

The Hunter turned toward Mindwave. “Margaret, relax.”

The young woman turned her glare from Valkyr to the Hunter. The pressure pushed down on him and he gritted his teeth as he fought to keep his feet. Behind him, Valkyr watched, amazed, and her hand dropped to her axe. The Hunter stopped her with a gesture, the effort clear in the shake of his hand.
