She wanted something lighter. Craved something less serious.
A door opened somewhere along the hall, so Millie shoved the papers back into the bin and was back on the stool as Sharon bundled her way back into the âboujee roomâ.
âSo did you think about it?â she asked, as if sheâd never left.
Millie needed a second to remember what theyâd been talking about. âI canât plan your event,â she said. âI donât do that now. It was my old job. I gave it up a while back. I did tell you thatâ¦â
Sharon raised a single, plucked eyebrow, as if she didnât recall any of that. âWhat do you do now?â
âI run a dog grooming business and write a few pieces about local people and local stories.â
Sharon made a low humming noise. âDonât take this the wrong way,â she said. âBut that sounds a bit⦠lame. Why not come work with me? We can relaunch my brand together. Obviously itâll be my name all over it â but Iâll tell people you were there.â She stopped, looking Millie up and down, and then added: âNo offence, but nobody knows who you are.â
As usual when somebody casually threw in a âno offenceâ, there was clear and probably deliberate offence.
Millie bit her lip both metaphorically and actually. The truth was, people in Whitecliff did know who she was â and sheâd have preferred it if that wasnât the case. Also, even if she did have the mildest interest in Sharonâs proposal, if it could be called that, she wasnât entirely clear what the other womanâs brand actually was.
âItâll give you the chance to get back into a real job,â Sharon continued. âYou must be missing all the famous people you used to work with?â
âNot really,â Millie replied. âAnd they werenât that famous. I usually dealt with the agents and talent bookers.â As she was speaking, it suddenly occurred to Millie that Sharon was a couple of years younger than Zoe, who was already younger than Millie herself. She might be the right age⦠Before Sharon could utter any more nonsense, Millie continued: âDid you grow up in Whitecliff?â
Sharon had started to say something about how many followers she had online but cut herself off when she realised sheâd been asked a question.
âHavenât you seen the video?â she replied. âI did a walk-around for my followers. Showed them a few places from where I grew up.â
âDid you go to Whitecliff Primary?â
âEveryone went there, didnât they?â
âWere you taught by Mr Ashworthâ¦?â
Something changed at the mention of that name. Sharon had been playing with her hair but she let it fall and, for the first time since Millie had arrived, she put down her phone. And then, unexpectedly, a smile slipped across her face.
âHe was my form tutor,â she said. âHe was so nice. There was this one boy who used to pick on me â but Mr Ashworth saw it happening once and made him sit at the front of the class. He told me I could go to him if I ever had a problem.
