Jesus, may I recognize you in the everyday activities and incidents of my life.

John 21:24-25

I suppose that if all the other things Jesus did were written down, the whole world could not contain the books. JOHN 21:25

An Unfinished Story

Apparently Jesus performed so many miracles while he was on earth that it was impossible to write them all down. He must have healed many more lives, taught many more sermons, and encouraged many more hurting people than could possibly have been recorded in the Gospels.

That work continues to this day and beyond.

Consider J. Oswald Sanders. Before he was fifty, he was so badly afflicted with arthritis that he could barely get out of bed. He could have taken a nice retirement, but instead he was about to enter the most productive and creative years of his life. At age fifty Sanders left a prosperous career as an attorney in New Zealand to lead the China Inland Mission (now called Overseas Missionary Fellowship).

After several years of leading the mission, Sanders “retired” again, only to take on the directorship of a Christian college. Then, once again, he took retirement. The twice-widowed Sanders certainly deserved rest. But rather than taking it easy, he spent his last twenty years traveling around the world to more than three hundred speaking engagements per year.

Respect for him grew even though he never sought the limelight or tried to maintain his position. And remarkably, as he entered his second and third careers, he was totally freed from arthritis.

By the time most men approach ninety years of age, they are long finished accomplishing great things. But not J. Oswald Sanders. He was working on his last book when he passed into eternity at eighty-nine years of age.36

Sanders was an example of the remarkable work Jesus still does in men’s lives—of the work he wants to do in you.
