Informal first steps

Learning more after our initial exposure to autism is relatively easy due to the wealth of online information that is currently available. Entire communities such as wrongplanet.net have now existed for the past decade. Many Internet sites include informal “quizzes” for self-diagnosis. Thus begins a journey of self-discovery!

There are numerous benefits to taking online screenings. At this stage in self-identification, some degree of ambivalence or even denial usually persists. Reading multiple statements that fit uncannily well with your experience can help you become more open to the possibility that Asperger’s has played a significant role in your life. Questions may cover areas of your personal history that you would never have realized are related to being on the autism spectrum. Your self-understanding begins to broaden.

Online screenings also have several drawbacks. They rely on self-observation and are subject to your blind spots. Few of these assessments have been tested on large sample sizes, so their statistical reliability or validity may be questionable. Most important, online screenings do not differentiate between autism and other conditions. For example, you may agree with the statement “I have difficulty in social situations,” but this might also be endorsed by someone not on the autism spectrum but who is challenged by generalized anxiety, depression, or social phobia.
