Grave of Midnight Mary

THEY SAY YOUâRE NOT SUPPOSED TO GO TO BED ANGRY, and I assume the same principle applies to your deathbed, as well. Somebody forgot to tell Midnight Mary.
At least, thanks to her tombstone, thatâs her name in death. In life, she was known by the name Mary E. Hart. The story goes (and goes and goes) that one day Mary was misdiagnosed with the condition of death and was, as a result, given the normally appropriate treatment of interment in the earth. The night of her burial, her sister or aunt or some such relative had vivid enough nightmares about Mary that she had Maryâs body exhumed.
Upon doing so, the exhumers foundâ¦well, letâs just say grisly confirmation that Mary had been buried alive. The story is documented in detail with eyewitness testimony, photographs, county recordsâ¦just kidding; no evidence of the truthfulness of any aspect of this story exists. There is a grave to hang it on, though.
It can be found in Evergreen Cemetery on Ella Grasso Boulevard in New Haven, Connecticut, the same cemetery where Sarah Winchester of Winchester Mystery House fame is buried. Maryâs tombstone is a giant brick of rough pink stone the size of a foosball table. On its forward surface is a large oval, in which the following story is inscribed, give or take a few punctuation marks for flow reasons:
