Laura was ready to go a few minutes later. She wore the same jeans and sandals as the day of the crash, and had borrowed one of Paul’s worn T-shirts. It was not the most suitable attire for her expedition, but they had nothing else to hand and both figured it would have to do in order to search for help. Laura preferred not to use the oar -- she felt more comfortable paddling with her hands -- and Adrian cursed to himself, remembering what it had taken him to get hold of that goddamned oar. After a last look around to check there was no sign of the Brazilians, they left the cave and walked to the southern end of the cove. Adrian could only move with great difficulty, holding on to Laura’s arm, while she dragged the dinghy along the sand by a rope. When they reached the departure point, they looked quietly at the sea, which was only ruffled by the murmur of the waves. That vast expanse of water was their gateway to freedom. The sky was still clear, but the east wind had been growing stronger and was driving waves shoreward.

They ran through the plan again. Laura would have to overcome the undertow and paddle some sixty yards directly offshore until she was level with the end of the cliff. Once she was in open sea, she would head south and in line with the coast until she found a safe place to hit dry land.

“Don’t lose your nerve. Take it easy. There’s a headwind and it won’t be easy to make headway. And when you reach open sea, we don’t know what currents you’ll come across. If they’re with you, use them; if not, be patient and stay the course -- he stared her right in the eyes and, with his hands placed on her shoulders, said, “Sure you’ll be OK?”

“Yes, I can take care of myself.”

“Remember, at the first sign of trouble, please, come right back. I’ll be here. Will you do that?”

“I promise.”

They slowly fell into each other’s arms.

Laura welcomed the shelter and warmth of her boss’s body, and held it tight. She guessed that odd uneasy feeling that ran through her body and made her legs quiver was normal, but she was amazed at the surprising energy that welled up inside her and wiped out any fear.

“Lots of luck, Laura.”

“Good luck to you, too. See you back home,” she answered with a smile.

“We’ll make it.”

Laura got into the boat and unflinchingly threw herself heartily into the first waves that crashed on to the beach, waving her arms and legs, which spun like windmills. The wind hindered the little raft’s progress, which gained ground on the horizon in fits and starts, as it pulled away from the shore.

Adrian balled up his fists and drove her on by shouting encouragement. Only a few seconds had gone by and already he was quite regretting having let her go.

The waves pitched and tossed the boat, this way and that, up and down, playing with the foreign body that lay on their back.
