Chapter 19
Briggs was reading off his laptop screen. He said, âAutopsy and forensics reports on the Quinlan case.â He spoke without taking his eyes off the screen. âThey found plenty of fingerprints around the place, but nothing identifiable.â
âProbably all Samantha Quinlanâs,â Danny said. âShe lived alone.â
âWhat about the cigar?â I said.
Briggs read further down the screen. âGood news and bad news,â he said. âThe lab lifted a partial print from the cigar and a ton of DNA.â
âWhatâs the bad news?â Danny said.
âThere was no print match in our system and DeMarco has no DNA in the system to compare it to.â
âThen we canât put him at the crime scene,â Danny said.
âNot unless we get a DNA sample from him and it matches,â Briggs said.
âCan we bring him in for questioning?â Danny said.
âBased on what? We canât prove he was at Quinlanâs apartment,â Briggs said.
âHis record verifies heâs had a troubled past when it came to women,â I said. âAnd heâs recently had a problem with Quinlan. Her murder fit the timeline. That might give us enough probable cause to bring him in for interrogation. Maybe we can get a DNA sample from him.
Briggs closed his screen and swiveled his chair back to face us. âLetâs keep this latest murder quiet,â he said. âSo far, the press hasnât gotten hold of it. Iâll make sure it stays that way.â
Briggs wanted to keep the fourth murder from the public for obvious reasons. I agreed with him. Although I saw no connection to helping solve the case, it would at least prevent an unnecessary panic in the city.
Danny said, âWhat about DeMarco?â
Briggs leaned back in his chair and thought for a moment. âWe havenât had a break in this case yet,â he said. âBring in Mr. DeMarco.â
Danny and I took a ride to DeMarcoâs yard in South Jersey. We didnât call ahead and arrived unannounced. Lumberjackâs face appeared as he opened the door a few inches. When he saw us, he said, âWhatta you guys want? Mr. DeMarco donât wanna see you.â
I said, âYouâre not as friendly as you were the first time we were here.â
Danny said, âTell DeMarco we want to see him.â
âHe ainât here.â
âLying to the police gets you in trouble,â I said.
âIâve been in trouble before. Get lost before ya get hurt!â
I hated to be threatened, almost as much as I hated being lied to.
Lumberjack opened the door wider, enough to show us he was holding a three-foot-long two-by-four in his right hand.
âWhatâre you going to do with that, whittle toothpicks?â I said.
He didnât think that was funny. I could tell by the shade of red his face turned and how he curled his upper lip. The two-by-four went up quickly and was on its way down when Danny reached out and blocked it before it could part my hair and my head. Lumberjack tried to yank the wood from Dannyâs grasp. Danny held on to it with both hands, trying to wrench it from Lumberjackâs grip. He was having a hard time of it because of Lumberjackâs gorilla strength, so I made a move.
