You will never believe who showed up on my doorstep today. I still can’t believe it. Sarah Steinberg. At first, I didn’t even recognize her. In high school she was all goth—died her hair black and some other bizarre color, wore black clothes, sported Hot Topic jewelry, had that whole Avril Lavigne smeared-black-makeup look going on. Once bleak. Now chic. Talk about a transformation. Her hair a shiny reddish blonde. A touch of makeup. Pastel cable-knit sweater (she might have quit booze and drugs, but I detected a hint of stale cigarette smoke lurking in those cable-knit threads). And she’s a rock star. I listened on Spotify after she left. Not my cup of tea, but she does have a great voice.

Anyway, she stopped by on her “Making Amends” tour. That’s what she called it. Which, I will admit, is pretty funny. She asked if I still used (was she trying to recruit me into AA?). I told her I dabbled here and there. So I lied. I wasn’t about to lay my shit on the table with someone I haven’t laid eyes on in twelve years. I thought she was going to apologize for ghosting me when we got to high school. But her apology confused me. She apologized for “introducing” me to drugs and alcohol, and that she “pressured” me when I said no. I have zero recollection of this, but if she says it happened that way, who am I to argue? When I told her I was sorry for stealing Rafael, she just waved her hand and said they had been on the outs anyway. I thought she might bring up the stabbing incident (a journal entry for another day), but she didn’t, so neither did I. Camilla once told me that she saw Sarah and Joanna fighting that night. Maybe Joanna is a stop on her “Making Amends” tour. But here’s the thing, dear journal, I really like her. She seems like a good person, someone I can talk to and trust. I think I found a new friend. Well, an old new friend! Yay for me!! We’ve already made plans to get together in a couple of weeks before she heads out on her Europe tour.
