Kaleisha stopped typing. She made sure she had saved what she had done. She hoped it wasnât bad news for poor Theresa.
Chapter 12
The Testimony of Anne Moore
The interview was timed for 9.30. Anne would have dropped the boys off at school by then. Even so she was a little late. She was red faced and flustered, the right cheek seeming much redder than the left.
âSorry, sorryâ she said. She appeared to be out of breath, âTimmyâs teacher caught me. Heâd bitten another child in the playground. Again. Not the same child. Another one. Honestly they make such a fuss. Itâs a playground. Iâll have to talk to Imogen about how to handle it. Come in. What are we doing standing in the doorway?â
âDiscussing your sonâs potential arrest for Actual Bodily Harmâ said Kaleisha.
The look on Anneâs face made clear that she was not amused. Now Kaleisha remembered when they had first met she had not smiled when she made a similar jest about arresting the boys. âItâs ok Anneâ she said âI was joking. Heâs not even at the age of criminal responsibility, it was a pleasantryâ.
âMore an unpleasantryâ said Anne hanging up her coat and surveying the chaos of toys across the floor, âdo you mind if I tidy this before we start. I hate mess. Iâve seen people injured in gardens even with a single hosepipeâ.
âNot at all. Letâs do itâ said Kaleisha, âfour hands twice as many as two handsâ.
Anne looked at her as she might at one of the boys who had denied breaking something she had watched him do. âTautologyâ she said.
âIsnât that just what educated folk in England say when people repeat the same idea in different wordsâ she smiled though she knew that what she had said wasnât actually a tautology.
Kaleisha had been recently drafted into her present team. It wasnât the first time she had to get used to a new team at short notice. During her appraisal two weeks ago she had been told she made too much use of humour when interviewing members of the public and even suspects. Her response that she thought members of the public and suspects were the same thing had not amused Inspector Drayton any more than the look on Anneâs face suggested her further effort had been successful here. But then Inspector Drayton did not know that his team often referred to him as Chief Inspector Dreyfus and would sometimes hum the âPink Pantherâ theme tune.
Anne did seem to relax a little when the floor area was cleared and the toys stored in the colourful plastic crates. Kaleisha resisted the temptation to pretend to trip over one of them. Anne made them a coffee and sighed deeply, cradling hers as they sat down looking like an old fashioned advert for the brand. She looked at Kaleisha and smiled. The harassed mother became more human in that moment. Kaleisha did not have children. If the one or two scares hadnât been enough, her nephews and
