The most significant thing that emerged from this initial conversation about the situation was that Mary kept saying she knew she hid the tickets in a place where nobody could find them.

Rossi became so interested in her story and so delighted to be working with someone who was so different from anyone he had seen before, that time just flew by.

"I was very pleased with myself," Rossi remembered. "Here I am, a young therapist with all this education, working in a million-dollar office building. There weren't many blacks who came to this part of town, and I can't recall a single other one who ever showed up at my office. There were big countertransference issues going on with meI was so glad to be working with someone like Mary, someone who was more like my own lower-class background. I very much identified with her."

Rossi was trying so hard to do a good job that he lost track of time. He kept asking her questions about her life and family, when abruptly she sat back and shook her head sadly.

"You not hip-nose doctor?" she asked, dubiously.

"Yes, of course. I do hypnosis," Rossi answered, puzzled by her worried expression all of a sudden.

Mary looked at him searchingly. "You not real hip-nose doctor?"

Rossi glanced at his watch and saw there were only ten minutes left in the session. He had become so engrossed in Mary's story that he had forgotten to follow through on the hypnosis she had wanted.

Rossi explained that before they could do hypnosis, they first had to get some background information cleared up. He then asked her if she was ready to begin.
