Chapter 21

Barbara and Beebee

September 27

“Barbara! Get your tushy over here,” Beebee hissed.

Barbara was in the middle of peeling back the paper liner of her third muffin of the morning. She set the muffin down on a stack of People magazines and scooted over in her chair to see what Beebee wanted.

“I’m not designing this!” Beebee said. Nothing bound two people together like uniting against someone else, and she was thankful to have a perfect target. Perhaps she and Barbara could bond over this instead of squabbling amongst themselves that they had been far too much lately.

“You’re not designing what? Some car ad?” asked Barbara. Neither woman liked doing car ads. They were tedious and filled with lots of boring information since each week the local dealers would get in new cars with unique features like HEATED LEATHER SEATS! and CONVERTIBLE THIRD ROWS! Car ads, unlike, for instance, ads for drink specials at local bars or two-for-one tanning packages at local salons, were basically just a full page of type. Not fun to design! And getting one little detail wrong, like listing a price as $24,982 when it was supposed to be $42,982, for instance, caused more trouble than it was worth.

“Look closer. It’s not just some car ad,” said Beebee. She jutted her chin toward her computer screen. There was a picture of Elinor, dressed in a navy blue dress, standing beside a car and gesturing like Vanna White. Under her breath, Beebee muttered, “No wonder she needed those blasted highlights. I’ll bet they reimbursed her!”

“What’s this all about?” asked Barbara, moving closer, looking over the top of her glasses, and frowning. “Darn it all. I need a new prescription!” she exclaimed, reaching for her muffin and picking up where she’d left off with it. “I can tell that bakery girl still isn’t using the lard and Pam combo I told her about.”

“This is from Burleson and Burgerman,” Beebee whispered.

“Burleson and Burgerman Motors?” Barbara repeated as she bit into her muffin.

“Shhhhhh!” said Beebee, glancing over at where Nile and Elinor were sitting, surrounded by the fall produce, hay bales, and scarecrow that Elinor had refused to take home. The picture-perfect little lovebirds were laughing and chatting, as usual. They had music playing and didn’t seem to be paying attention to her or Barbara.

“Is that a picture of Elinor? Our Elinor?” asked Barbara, jutting a thumb discreetly in the direction of Elinor.

“It sure as heck is!” said Beebee.

“Why is Elinor in a picture for a car dealership?” asked Barbara.

“Apparently, she’s their spokesmodel,” Beebee scoffed. She handed the ad order over to Barbara.

“Let me see that,” said Barbara, grabbing her reading glasses and skimming the order form.

“Burleson and Burgerman Motors… Full page ad to run on back of paper until further notice… Ad copy: Looking For a Great Deal on a Great Car? Come to the Ones You TRUST Today! Burleson and Burgerman Motors on Highway 9 in Snowflake Valley. Tell ‘Em Elinor Sent You!”

Barbara lowered the ad order form and she and Beebee made gagging faces at each other.
