The One that Got Away
Babu was pacing up and down the hallway, having difficulty getting rid of his fears. He checked the front window and then the back. And then he opened the drawer to check the motion detector again. Being alone in this jungle was not helping matters. Anyone could come in, bump and bury him in the thickets and no one would ever know. No, he had to get to his killer before he could get to him.
He called his friend Sudhir, a constable at the Powai station and narrated the entire story. “I need to check out the profiles of everyone in the Mumbai force,” Babu said.
“But what if he was not a policeman?” Sudhir objected, “Maybe just some freak dressed in a uniform. It’s pretty easy to lay hands on one.”
“You don’t understand. This suspense is killing me. I’ve got to start somewhere, and you let me know if there is something better in your head…”
Sudhir thought for a while, “You will need to log into Mumbai police’s intranet and scan through the profiles one at a time,” he said. “But it will not be easy. I can help you with the username and password, but you will still need access to a computer connected to the network. And there are thousands of policemen posted in Mumbai. If you need to scan all the profiles, you would need hours of private access to the computer.”
“In that case, we can go at night,” Babu was desperate for a solution. “We can even spread this over a couple of nights if that’s what it takes. You just get me in and logged on, and then leave. Even if I am caught, I won’t mention your name….”
“Won’t mention my name? Yes, that is easy…,” Sudhir said sarcastically.
“C’mon, you know I am good on my word. Besides, no one will know.”
“Well, it’s a terrible idea,” Sudhir seceded after some persuasion. “But we can’t do this in Powai. It will be more difficult to deny everything if it happens here.”
“Then, what can we do?”
“Our best bet is the headquarters. I will be able to get you in that building much easier than any other local station. You come down here and meet me near the Vihar society at seven, and then I will take you along.”
Babu thanked him and hung up immediately, not giving Sudhir enough time to change his mind.
Alina’s Jodhpur flight landed at 1:30 p.m. It was a seventy-five kms ride to the sleeping village of Pali. Once out of the perimeters of the city, Alina was greeted by the sight of the dust, sand and the scorched earth of the desert. She asked the driver to switch off the air conditioner and in spite of his subdued protests, rolled down the windows. The speeding warm air hit her, kissing away all the moisture from her face. She began filtering the sandy images to see if she could place her parents in the middle of this beautiful desert, going
