Chapter Fifteen:
Perversion
âWhat is a friend? A single soul inhabiting two bodies.â Aristotle
âYouâre back!â Ella wrapped Eleonore in a giddy embrace when she had returned to the barracks. âI have so much to tell you.â
âAs do I,â Eleonore broke off, still uncomfortable with such familiarity.
âCome, come,â Ella grabbed Eleonoreâs hand and led her back to their bunk. âOn second thought, letâs talk outside,â she grabbed Eleonoreâs shoulders and spun her towards the door with a glance at the watchful eyes.
Leading Eleonor back outside the barracks, Ella stopped when they were a few yards away and crossed her arms as she leaned in, âthe resistance is growing, and we have a plan.â
âReally?â Eleonore mirrored her, enjoying the intrigue.
âYes,â Ella nodded excitedly. âSoon we will all be free.â
âHow?â Eleonore shook her head.
âWell,â Ella checked over her shoulder, âIâve been re-assigned. Thanks to some clever bribery, I âm now âemployedâ manufacturing weapons in the armory.â
âI donât understand how constructing bombs for the Nazis helps the resistance?â Eleonore was thoroughly confused.
âSlight defects here and there which go unnoticed to the untrained eye,â Ella winked.
âGenius,â Eleonore nodded.
âBut thatâs not the main purpose,â Ella lowered her voice even further. âIâve been sneaking small portions of dynamite. The men are going to construct some rudimentary explosives to destroy the crematoriums.â
âThatâs ambitious,â Eleonore threw her eyebrows up, enthralled but wary.
âWhatâs wrong?â Ella stood back, catching Eleonoreâs lack of enthusiasm.
âNothing,â Eleonore shook her head, but knew she had failed to keep Ella off the trail.
âTell me,â Ella tilted her head.
âEven if the plan works,â Eleonore sighed, âwhat then?â
âWhat do you mean?â
âWhat happens when the explosives go off and the buildings crumble? That wonât stop them.â
âItâs a rather elaborate plan,â Ella defended, âand Iâve only imparted the highlights to you.â
âI didnât mean to offend,â Eleonore raised her hand. âIâm just concerned is all.â
âI know,â Ella relaxed, âbut even if we can destroy the production of death and bide some time for the Allies, wouldnât that be enough?â
âI hate not knowing whatâs happening out in the world,â Eleonore crossed her arms as she shivered. âEven at the Villa thereâs no gossip to pick up on.â
âOh, yes,â Ellaâs eyes lit up, âtell me all about the Villa.â
âWell,â Eleonore paused as she pondered what would be worth telling. She certainly was not going to indulge on how well she was fed, not to someone as hungry as she had been. âThe Commandantâs family live quite comfortably, enjoying the fruits of plunder. They are a happy bunch, and I doubt anyone besides Commandant Hoess knows what the real business of Auschwitz entails.â
âDid you see him?â Ella peered at Eleonore who was beginning to wonder if their friendship went any deeper than Ellaâs ambitions.
âHoess?â
âWho else?â Ella shrugged.
âYes,â Eleonore nodded cautiously, curious as to what request was going to follow.
âExcellent,â Ellaâs eyes bounced as her mind ran wild with scheming. âWe can use that.â
âYou mean you can use me,â Eleonore grew impatient.
âDonât be petty,â Ella lowered her gaze. âThis goes beyond either of us. Thereâs no room for sentiment.
