EARLY LOSS

Colonel John Slocum commanded the 2nd Rhode Island Infantry. On June 7, 1861, the regiment was paraded throughout its hometown for the first time before it embarked for Washington. Six weeks later, the 2nd marched to battle near the Bull Run River. As they moved toward the enemy position, Colonel Slocum was in front of the regiment, scouting the enemy’s position. He was struck in the head and later died. His tomb and memorial can be found in the Swan Point Cemetery in Providence.
