(UCDA P17b/102, pages 157–175)

Thomas ‘Tom’ McEllistrim (1894–1973) was born in Ballymacelligott near Tralee. A farmer, he joined the Irish Volunteers in 1915 and mobilised with the Ballymacelligott Company on Easter Week. He subsequently was interned in Frongoch. As captain of the Ballymacelligott Company, he led the attack on the Gortatlea RIC Barracks in April 1918 and numerous other engagements in the area until he was appointed V/C of Kerry No. 2 Brigade flying column and became its leader after the death of Dan Allman. He commanded his men at the ambushes at Headford Junction and Clonbanin. McEllistrim took the Republican side in the Civil War and remained active throughout. He was elected a Republican TD in 1923, joined Fianna Fáil in 1926 and remained a member of Dáil Éireann until 1969. He lived all his life in Ballymacelligott and died in 1973.

This interview took place at Ballymacelligott, Co. Kerry, in about 1950.
