Chapter Fourteen
First things first. I headed home to do a quick search for the storage facility and, after a few minutes comparing the logo to ones around the area, realized it was for Safe-T-Way Storage just outside the DC limits and about a twenty-minute drive. By the time I changed into jeans from the suit Iâd been wearing and descended to my car, the sun had set, fallâs deepening chill meaning the thin jacket I wore was going to require assistance from the heater.
Did I mention I bought a new car? With great and deferential respect for my old clunker I traded for pennies on my new and shiny replacement. And though I chose to be practical and leased a small crossover (deception experts need storage, yo), I picked mid-range, no bells and whistles (though it came with a surprising number of perks I was still discovering, like heated side mirrors, who did that?). I had wanted a color but went with basic black. Black was all the rage for us investigative types, donât you know.
While I respected my old ride, this new one made my life so much easier. Like not having to worry it might break down on the freeway for no apparent reason, gasping its last and abandoning me in the middle of nowhere. Or have lights turn on that I vaguely understood meant an issue I really didnât have the time (or the finances) to deal with. Not to mention the fact it drank gas like a professional alcoholic on a bender. Instead, I zipped along at ten miles over the limit without worry I might blow something important in the engine and not having to listen to the faint groan of complaint from somewhere in the structure of the vehicle that sounded far too much like a person being tortured. All at thirty miles to the gallon, because apparently now I cared about things like that.
Oh, and how awesome was that new car smell?
I pulled into the parking lot of the storage facility and was exiting the car when I realized maybe I should have texted Elle and had her meet me here. If there was evidence in the locker, she should be around to take proper steps for chain of custody. There was also the niggling concern I might run afoul of trouble, too, since that seemed to be my lot in life and work.
Then again, no one knew I was coming, so the likelihood I was followed had to be slim. As for the evidence thing, well⦠surely, I should find out first if there was even reason for her to be here? Yes, yes, I found a key under the floor of a dead womanâs medium room. That should have been enough and would have been for someone with a proper sense of right and wrong. Weâd firmly established that wasnât me, I assume? That right and wrong were kind of a loosey-goosey, topsy-turvey, take it or leave it if it suited me kind of situation? Thought so.
