Chapter 11

Bryn jumped as he woke, as if from a nightmare. He groaned as he sat up, finding himself in the medical room of HQ again. The room was empty, each bed in pristine condition. He sat near the window and blinked away some blurriness.

“Hello?” Bryn asked, finding his voice weak. He cleared his throat and flinched from the pain.

“Mister Pearce,” a familiar voice said outside. “I believe the lad is awake.”

Quick footsteps pounded in the hall. Ebenezer appeared in the doorway. A smile curled his lips.

“You look fine,” Bryn said weakly.

“Lena,” Ebenezer said. He turned his head and pointed at a terrible scar that covered the right side of his neck.

“What about me?”

Ebenezer walked into the room and sat on a bed. “Oliver Trout. He numbed the pain as much as he could and did some work. You’ve been out a few days, Bryn.”

“We won?”

Ebenezer nodded.

Bryn tried to turn. His breath caught as pain flowed through his whole body. He fell back against a pillow and stared at the ceiling.

“Don’t move. You need more time to heal. Lena said she’d help you heal during the last leg of the process. You just need rest at the moment.”

“I hate that.”

“Vincent said he’d make you some food. I’ll let him know you’re wide awake.”

Bryn nodded weakly. Ebenezer walked to the door and lingered for a moment.

“Thanks, Neez.”

“You scared me, Bryn.” Ebenezer didn’t look back. Bryn could only see the back of his head and the scar running along the side of his neck.

“I’ll get stronger.”

Ebenezer nodded and disappeared around the corner. Bryn stayed sitting up despite the pain. He wanted to push himself through it as if that would help him heal faster.

Bryn managed to survive a fight when the odds were more than stacked against them. Even another team of Crows had been killed before they arrived. He shouldn’t have survived and wouldn’t have if Neez was an idiot.

It wasn’t just Bryn’s mana pool that made the fight difficult. He hadn’t watched his enemies. Neez learned quickly and knew what to look for, while Bryn ran in blindly. More than that. He was stunned by the same ability more than once. It was a foolish mistake that he paid dearly for. The same mistake could easily cause his death in the future.

“You are awake,” an unfamiliar voice said.

Bryn looked back at the door and winced. The man had thin, gray stubble on his head and jaw. He had glasses that distorted his eyes, making them look massive. He walked in with wooden heels clicking on the floorboards. His clothes made him look like nobility, but something about him felt off. He was awkward in some way that Bryn couldn’t quite decide.

“Who are you?”

“Oliver Trout. The one who stopped you from dying.”

“Oh, the one Millie doesn’t like.”

“Hm.” Oliver walked up to the bed. “How’s the pain?”

“Not good.”

Oliver placed calloused fingers on Bryn’s shoulder. It tingled for a second, and then all his pain vanished. “Good now?”

Bryn nodded slowly. “What did you do?”

“My ability numbs the pain.
