MY MOUTH GAPED. “I haven’t taken a salary for over a year now. You don’t have to guarantee me a salary Glory.”

“You’re not in business to work for free Daria. Of course you’ll have a salary.”

“But—” He put his hand up to cut me off.

“Before you think I’m taking pity on you or just being generous, I’m not. In order to turn a business around, you have to deal in real numbers. No business owner works for free. A salary is a cost of doing business. And yours is not much, comparatively speaking, of course.”

“When you haven’t had a salary in over a year, it’s a lot,” I said, gaping at the seventy-five thousand dollar figure in the compensation line.”

“Compared to what successful gallery owners earn, you’re being paid a pittance. But I have to watch my investment. You don’t make money by leading with your emotions. In fact, that’s a sure way to lose money. Numbers don’t lie. Think with your head, and the numbers won’t lead you wrong.”

“I ... I don’t know what to say – to any of it. I mean, you’ve set up a debt restructure plan, how to rework deals with vendors, re-doing my lease. ... You’ve thought of everything. I ... I’m speechless.”

“I’m glad it all appeals to you. Fondue has the makings of a very successful gallery. It will be by the time I’m finished. And that’s just the beginning.”

“I’d be a fool to turn you down,” I said.

“I was hoping you’d see it my way.”

“Let me read the rest,” I said, feeling light-headed at the possibilities.

I’ll be out of debt. I’ll have positive cash flow. I’ll have a credit line – in the form of Glory’s investment firm. I’ll have an actual salary. As an ex Wall Street broker, of course, I knew what an Angel Investor was. But for the first time, the impact of the term hit me. They really were angels to someone like me; someone forced into almost losing their dream. For someone to come in and hand it all back to you on a silver platter. Angel indeed.

Maybe I’d misjudged Glory. Maybe it was time to let bygones be bygones.

I looked across the booth and smiled at him. A genuine smile – for the first time since I was seventeen. He smiled back, and it reached all the way to the depths of his smokey grey eyes. I dropped my head in embarrassment, not wanting what was in my heart to release itself in my smile, my eyes, my lips – anything on my face.

I kept smiling with my head down and I kept reading, almost too excited to concentrate. “What is this?” I asked, pointing to a section entitled, ‘Intimacy.’

Had I read that right?

“What?” he responded, the darkening of his steel-grey eyes telling me he knew exactly what I was referring to.

“Th—... this intimacy part?”

“It’s a part of marriage. I’m a man. You’re a woman. We’re going to be living under the same roof. We’re attracted to each other.
