Dennis called Signe, who answered by reciting her telephone number. Dennis was lying in foetal position in the cockpit and wasn’t going anywhere.

‘Could you come over?’ was all he could muster.

‘What’s happened?’ asked Signe. When, however, she got no more than a gurgle in response, she slammed the phone down. Gerhard, who had been elaborately sipping his coffee from a saucer through a sugar cube, stood up immediately. Signe handed him a little bottle from the fridge as he rushed for the door.

Dennis could not recall much of what happened next. Eventually, Gerhard nimbly hopped on board, like the true old seadog he was. Holding Dennis, he managed to give him a syrupy drink that tasted of liquorice and plums.

‘Won’t be long now,’ Gerhard said, holding him like a little child.

Then they sat like that in the cockpit for a good while. Suddenly, everything felt normal again and Dennis’s sweat-drenched forehead began to recover its golden tan; his bloodshot eyes returned to their usual white.

‘There you go,’ Gerhard said, sounding chuffed.

‘What did you give me?’ wondered Dennis, still disorientated.

‘Boiled plums with aniseed, Signe made it. Our mother used to make it and it cures most kinds of tummy trouble.’

Dennis glanced at his watch. Gerhard could see he was stressed.

‘I was supposed to have a meeting a nine.’

‘Meeting?’ Gerhard grinned. ‘At this time of night?’ There was no fooling uncle Gerhard, he knew that much.

‘I’m going to Gunnel’s, the woman who I rent the boat from,’ said Dennis.

Gerhard laughed.

‘I thought it had to be something special. But watch yourself, women like that can be dangerous,’ he warned Dennis with a wagging index finger.

‘Dangerous?’ Dennis asked, with a puzzled expression.

‘I’m sure you know what I mean,’ Gerhard chuckled as he jumped back up onto the jetty.

His work here was done and now he just wanted to get back to his armchair and the view across to Hållö island.
