C hastity heard Gabe’s voice before she saw him. So much for slipping into the back of the kitchen for lunch and a visit with Adam. She looked up in the direction of the surprisingly close sound and did a double take. If it had been up to her eyes alone, she probably wouldn’t have seen him at all, or at least not recognized that it was him. He and Dave stood high above the ground on a scaffolding plank inspecting something on the roof.

She turned away from the sight of Gabe in worn, fitted jeans with a leather tool belt slung low across his hips, and kept walking. She’d planned on avoiding him today, had spent the morning reading and if she could leave her book alone this afternoon, would go for a walk or even try fishing. The weather wasn’t as nice as it had been yesterday so she convinced herself she didn’t have to swim—because swimming meant time, or at least communication, with Gabe.Last night, needing to quash the strange stirrings of feeling she had for him, she had taken his accusations about her marriage without argument, but she wasn’t ready or strong enough for more.

“Yo, Chastity!” Dave called out. “Lunchtime already? Wait up, we’ll come with you.”

Great. Looked like she didn’t have a choice about being ready or strong enough. She watched the two men climb down from the scaffold.

Gabe would never have believed the truth, that she had married Tom because she had lost the last family member she felt any real connection to, that she was alone and lonely, because she didn’t honestly believe in love—for her—not the soul-deep, lifelong connection touted in the movies. Tom had been kind and friendly and up-front about his reason for wanting marriage. Another reason Gabe would never believe.

Gabe jumped lightly to the ground.

“You two go ahead. I’ll go round up the guys.” With a smile in her direction, Dave disappeared.

Right. Good. Gabe drew level with her and they started walking. Forget about last night. Forget about the animosity. Forget about the strange other heat that had preceded it. Today was a new day, could hopefully be a neutral day. “When you said you’d be working, I didn’t think you meant working, working.”

He looked at her, relaxed and seemingly blessedly neutral. “As in manual labor?”

“Precisely.”

“Judging me, Chass?” Okay, so he wasn’t going to forget about last night. But he said it with a half grin that softened his face. And so maybe at least he, like her, was moving forward, putting the past, both recent and more distant, behind him.

“Apparently.”

“Actually,” he continued, the grin stretching into a smile that spoke to something deep within her, “I didn’t think I’d be doing this kind of work, either. But the lawyer who was coming out for a meeting had to reschedule for the afternoon and Dave was down a man this morning, so…” He shrugged, broad shoulders lifting casually beneath the soft cotton of a white T-shirt.

“You know what you’re doing? With a hammer?”

“I know enough.
