Because her responsibility was to always put Lady Anis first.

I knew just how much Ilia cherished Lady Anis. That’s why Ilia’s special someone couldn’t be anyone else. I couldn’t possibly take Lady Anis’s place.

Yet I couldn’t put those nebulous feelings into words. Why? I asked myself, but no answer was forthcoming.

I fell silent, and Tilty turned her back to me from her position on the edge of the bed.

“You’re having silly thoughts again,” she told me. “Although if you ask me, Ilia is partly to blame here, too, for her bad timing, her clumsiness, and her poor understanding of her own feelings.”

“Ilia…did nothing wrong…”

“…True, Ilia has done nothing wrong. And neither have you, Lainie.”

“But—but I’ve caused her so much trouble, and now I’ve driven her to madness…”

“Indeed, which is why she isn’t at fault. But you’re also mistaken on that point. Yes, she has gone crazy; there’s no doubt about that.”

I had no idea what Lady Tilty was saying. When I looked up and glanced toward her, only her face was turned my way.

“How well do you know Ilia? Do you understand just how mad that woman is?”

“…I’m afraid I don’t follow.”

“She was an irredeemable fool up until Lady Euphyllia came along, and it only got worse when you arrived,” Lady Tilty said with a snort as she stared into the distance. Her tone of voice was almost spiteful, but I could hear the pity behind her words.

After a moment, she glanced toward the entrance. “If you want to know more, why don’t you ask the princess eavesdropping from behind the door?”

“…Er, I didn’t think the mood was right to come inside, that’s all,” Lady Anis said as she stepped inside, fixing Lady Tilty with a dissatisfied glare.

With that, Lady Tilty rose to her feet and made for the exit, patting Lady Anis on the shoulder as she passed her by. “Physically, she’s fine. I didn’t come here to be her counselor, so I’ll leave the rest to you.”

“Thank you, Tilty.”

“Don’t drag me into any more unnecessary quarrels, you hear?”

With those words, she closed the door behind her, leaving me and Lady Anis alone.

Feeling a new surge of guilt rising up inside me, I hastened to make a fresh apology. “I’m so very sorry, Lady Anis.”

“It’s all right. My work can wait. I’m more worried about you,” she said, taking a seat at the edge of the bed, where Lady Tilty had been sitting a moment earlier.

I didn’t want her to see my face right now, so I was secretly grateful that she sat with her back to me.

And yet, with Lady Anis by my side, my deepest-held feelings slowly rose to the surface.

“…I…”

“Yes?”

“I—I hate myself… It hurts so much… I just want to disappear… I want to give back, but all I ever do is cause trouble… I can’t do it… I’m afraid, and I hate myself for it…”

I halted and stammered, unable to get the words out properly. I knew I was being incoherent, that none of it made any sense.
