CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

YOU’RE RIGHT, WE didn’t need to invent a story,” Pallas said. “All we had to do was leave out a few minor details, such as the fact that we think the Carnelian Sleep Institute is conducting illegal paranormal experiments.”

“And the fact that I think I witnessed a woman’s body being hauled out of the clinic during an overnight sleep study,” Ambrose said. “There was no point bringing up either of those things, because Logan wouldn’t have taken them seriously.”

“We got off lightly today.” Pallas shuddered. “After the Saltwood fiasco, I didn’t know what to expect from the Carnelian police.”

She ate some of her broccoli and cheddar soup and tried not to watch as Ambrose wolfed down a fully loaded hamburger. She told herself that at the moment he needed the protein to help overcome the effects of sleep deprivation and anyway his diet was none of her business. It wasn’t like they were planning a future together.

They were sitting at the small table in her room eating the take-out lunch they had picked up at a café near the hotel. She knew they were both trying for some semblance of normal, but the effort wasn’t going well. Tension charged the atmosphere, and it wasn’t all coming from Ambrose. She was contributing her share. It was going to take time to work through the violent events of the morning.

Their suspicions of what had happened at the sleep clinic were not the only details they had failed to mention to Detective Logan. They had not told him about the memory card they had found in Geddings’s go bag. The two items on the card were currently in the process of being imported to Ambrose’s phone via her adapter.

“We got lucky with the cops because we had a lot of help from Logan,” Ambrose said. “He was very happy to let us skate on the illegal entry charge because he’s going to be the headline on the evening news and the morning edition of the Carnelian Gazette. Today was a serious résumé builder for him. Two drug dealers have died in a live-by-the-sword kind of way, and some stolen medications will be returned to the Carnelian Sleep Institute. He’ll get the credit for closing the case.”

“I suppose that’s why he let us off with just a warning,” Pallas said.

Her phone rang as she was eating the crackers that had come with the soup. She reached for the device.

“That will be Jodi Luckhurst,” Ambrose said around a mouthful of fries.

Pallas gave him a wry smile. “Is that an example of your ability to predict the future?”

“No, it’s an example of me figuring out that Luckhurst has probably heard the news about the explosion at Geddings’s place. She’ll want to know what happened.”

“We owe her an explanation,” Pallas said. “She was the one who warned us about the possibility of a booby trap. She may have saved our lives.”

“This is true.” Ambrose downed the last of his fries.

Pallas took the call and put it on speaker so that Ambrose could listen in.
