CHAPTER THIRTEEN

SAIPH

The mortal men had vanished by the time they’d left the alley earlier that day, and Saiph had been… displeased, to say the least. Though, tasting the blood of the water magick user had helped soften the blow. All mortals contained a spark of magic that gave them life—the mortal magick users simply contained more of it, able to wield one or sometimes even two elements.

Saiph hadn’t expected how much better their blood would taste though. It was like she was absorbing their magick as she fed. The blood of the mortal assassin now seemed like so much swill in comparison. In the Kingdom of Stars, the balls of ether were what provided their magic, burning for all eternity. When a star died, for they were long-lived, but eventually everything perished, their energy was released back into the ether that sustained them.

Now that she was on the mortal plane, Saiph needed something else to supplement the natural ether she would normally get back in her realm. It explained the sudden bloodlust she’d experienced since arriving, and the more magick she used, the hungrier she became. It was an unnerving realisation, though. Saiph had never really understood her kind’s need of fangs before this, but now it was clearer than ever—they were made for the mortal plane. At some point, probably lost to time, the stars and the mortals had likely existed here together, the magick in their blood a natural replacement for the ether-filled air in the Kingdom of Stars.

Re-energised from the feeding, Saiph could easily have kept searching the market all night. Auren’s weaker, mortal body could not keep up with Saiph’s own, however. So they had bought her some questionable smelling meat from the market and returned to the Forest, much to Saiph’s dismay, and completed a thankfully much shorter journey to Eloria. Auren explained that Orien was waiting for them with an update, and they would rest at the tavern before journeying back to the caves.

They moved through the town towards the tavern. A sign above the door declared it to be the best ale on this side of the northern border, and Saiph’s interest was momentarily piqued. She’d never tried human alcohol before and wasn’t sure what sort of effect it might have on her. The stuff they had in the Kingdom of Stars was likely strong enough to kill a mortal.

The town they had passed through was in a much better state than the pile of mud scrabbling to be a community Saiph had seen before her stay with the rebels. Camber, Auren had called it. A prickle of guilt tinged through her. So much progress destroyed at the hands of her people, her mother. Eloria had brick and wooden buildings in a slightly different style to those they’d seen down in Sommer. They were tucked together as if huddling for warmth all in a line, creating a dirt road through the middle that was broken up by a dry, stone fountain. Wheel tracks
