I wake the next morning to find a hot, sweaty guy in my kitchen. The only thing that could make this picture more perfect is . . .
Tom turns, coffee in hand, and holds it out to me, smiling. âThought you might like this.â
I might let out a sigh of girlish infatuation. Well, no, as a girl, I wouldnât have been nearly as impressed by a tattooed, muscular, dirt-and-sweat-streaked man handing me coffee. As a grown woman, though? Oh, yeah. It doesnât get any better than this.
âAbout last night . . .â I begin.
He scrunches his nose. âDonât mention it.â
âI have to. Liam was an ass. I know I said that, multiple times, but I kind of brushed it off, too, when I should have put a stop to it. Iâm not accustomed to hard liquor, and I overimbibed. Iâm sorry for the way he behaved toward you.â
His cheek twitches, and I replay my apology, wondering where Iâve gone wrong. Then he says, âI was more concerned by the way he talked about Daisy.â
âSheâs upset, isnât she?â I sigh. âHe was a jerk, but he wasnât seriously suggesting bed-swapping.â
âThat makes it okay? Sheâs a guest in your home. Your boyfriend joked about screwing her, like sheâs a piece of pie in the fridge that heâs welcome to sample.â
I flinch. He has a point, of course.
Before I can answer, Tom shakes his head. âIâm snapping at you because the person Iâd like to snap at is gone.â
I frown. âLiam? Heâs here somewhere.â
âHis car isnât.â
âWhat?â I walk to the kitchen window and peer out. âWhen did he leave?â
âBefore I arrived.â
I run my hands over my face. âDamn it. I hope heâs not in a mood. I figured heâd just come down without waking me, since itâs almostââI check the microwave clockâânoon.â
I pull out my cell phone. âNo message, either. Wonderful.â I tap in a text and send it. âWell, if he took off in a snit, thatâs one less problem for everyone today. Howâs Daisy doing?â
âFine. Weâre clearing the side weeds.â He nods down at the two other coffees he just poured. âI should get this to her before it goes cold.â
âTell her not to worry about lunch. Iâll drive into town and pick us up something.â
