CHAPTER FOURTEEN

“How’s he doing? Is he all right? He doesn’t look the proper shade of pasty white.” Lula paces alongside my brown sofa. No, I have not moved from my horrible studio just yet because I have not had time. But I figured this is the only place we could sneak Bob to in the middle of the night. We had doused his clothes with tequila, making it look like he was drunk.

“Calm down. Your new boy toy will be just fine. Give him a few minutes.”

“He is not my boy toy,” Lula hisses. “But is he okay?” She presses a palm to his forehead. “He feels warm. Too warm. Is that normal for a baby vampire?”

“Yes. And now you see why I could not change him.” From the moment she gave him her blood and then snapped his neck, her maker instincts kicked in. In an instant, her entire world started spinning around Bob. Bob Kline. I would be laughing, but he is a despicable person, and I do not like it one little bit. Remember what I said about vampires not being amazing sharers? This is an example. Yes, I do get the irony. Lula has been dealing with my librarian obsession. Now, I am trying not to get upset over the fact that her natural protectiveness has awoken for this…this…piece of human—sorry, ex-human—filth who tried to murder Miriam and participated in that horror show down in the catacombs.

“He’s not waking. Why is he not waking?” Lula rakes her fingertips through her blonde hair and starts pulling at the roots.

“Lula, he will wake. I promise. But please try to remember why you turned him. Remember what he has done.” I grip her by the shoulders. “You cannot keep him.”

“Huh?”

“The puppy must go back to the store.”

“No. No. I will not let you take him from me. He’s mine.” She beams down at his immobile form. “And look at him, all balding and wrinkly. He’s like an adorable shar-pei.” She sighs. “I love him.”

Oh, dear God. What have I done? “Lula, he is a murderer. He is a—” My cell phone chirps in my pocket. “One second.” I grab my phone and see it is Miriam. It is almost midnight, and she never calls this late. “Hello?”

“Michael?” Her voice is higher than usual. She sounds as if she is crying.

My own protective instincts kick in. “What happened?”

“Can you come over?” She sniffles.

“Yes, but please tell me what is the matter.” So I may bring the appropriate weapons. I need to know if I must stop by the grocery store to pick up knives or rob a gun store and pick up a machine gun.

“I-I’m sorry. I just really need someone here, and you’re the first person I thought of.”

“Are you all right?” My entire body is already pumping with adrenaline.

“Yes. I’m not hurt.”

“Has something happened to your books? Dog-eared a page?” Because if so…God help them!

“No.” She sobs. “Nothing like that. Can you come?” Sniffle, sniffle.

“I will be right over.
