CHAPTER THIRTY-TWO
Sunday, Jan 25
10:00 AM
Lawless and Collins returned to her office and sat down. âMan, I canât believe this. Itâs all happening so fast. One day Iâm a rookie homicide detective, and the next Iâm assigned to the Metro Squad.â
âNervous?â he asked with a smile.
âTerrified,â she responded.
âDonât lose any sleep over this. Weâll be joining a room full of cops exactly like you and me, only with a little more experience. Hope you didnât have any other plans for the rest of the day.â
âAs a matter of fact I did. I planned to spend half the day here at the office. I was planning to spend some time with my parents later this afternoon.â
âWell I guess thatâs out the window. Once the Metro Squad begins to roll youâre going to be pretty busy.â
âI know.â Lawless felt it was time to take charge. âLets prepare for the meeting this afternoon by reviewing everything we talked about last night, and then go over what we know about the Johnson County murder.â
âSounds good.â
Collins and Lawless had begun their task when her phone rang. She picked it up and answered, âHomicide, this is Detective Lawless.â
âDetective, itâs Sacks. Are you sitting down?â
âDid you get a print match?â she asked excitedly.
âRoger that, a perfect match. It seems your suspect was a recent guest in the Jackson County Detention Center. He spent a weekend in the cooler on a domestic violence charge last December. Iâm on my way to records right now. Iâll pull his file and meet you in your office in ten minutes.â
Lawless hung up her phone and looked Collins in the eye. âI think we have our suspect in the Garner case. We got a positive print match on a man who was in the county jail recently. Our crime lab manager is going to pull his file and bring it up. Why donât you wait here while I go update Captain Overstreet.â
While Collins cooled his heels, Detective Lawless went to Overstreetâs office to deliver the news. The Captain listened intently, and then said, âGood work, detective. Let me know if you need me to run interference for you.â
She promised to keep him advised, and then hurried back to her office. She arrived as Sacks was winding his way through the maze of desks in the large common office, the area they called the bullpen.
After introducing Collins to Sacks, the trio huddled together in her office and studied the file on the suspect carefully. The manâs name was Charles Marsh, a white male, six foot one and two hundred and five pounds. His age at the time of his arrest was 39. His mug shot closely resembled the artistâs sketches.
Marsh had been arrested on a domestic battery complaint filed by his wife. The complaint stated that Marsh had grabbed his wife by the hair during an argument, and when she pulled away she fell and bruised her right knee. The arresting officers stated that Marsh had been cooperative during the arrest and offered no resistance.
