Chapter 22

“Do you want to talk about what happened back there?” Soren asked when we stopped at a snowy overlook a few hours after the border crossing.

“Not particularly.” I slid off Posey’s back and turned away from the general, stretching this way and that.

“I’d like to talk about it.” He took hold of my hand and tugged me toward him. “Celestina, you didn’t need to threaten your own life to get those guards to back down. They would have let us through without anyone having to shed a drop of blood. I don’t want you to ever feel like you have to do that again. You’re a guest in my land. I’ll do my duty to keep you safe.”

“We all will,” Raya said as she walked by. She nudged Gray in the side. “Won’t we?”

Gray grunted.

I felt like Gray. This wasn’t something I wanted to talk about. I tried to pull away. But Soren tightened his grip.

“Even if it meant bleeding those guards dry, I would do it a hundred times over to protect you.”

I shook my head. “No. Don’t.”

“Celestina. You’re important.”

“Because of this magic you think I have?”

“No. You’re important because you worry about foolish guards who dare question their general. You’re important because you’d rather fall on a sword than cause anyone around you a lick of trouble. You’re important because you pick up pretty rocks alongside the road when you think no one is watching. Gods, Celestina you’re important simply because you are who you are. And the more time I spend with you, the more I want to tear out the throats of anyone who looks at you wrong.”

I shook my head. “You’re ridiculous.”

“Just when I’m around you.” He brushed a quick kiss on my lips.

“That’s the truth,” Raya called out.

I could no longer look at Soren and imagine the man everyone called the Beast of Fein. While he was large and strong, he continually proved himself to be the kindest man I’d ever met. And no matter how I tried to protect myself I kept falling. And falling. And falling for him.

This is going to end badly, Raya had warned.

Goddess, she wasn’t wrong.
