Chapter 18.

Ragnarök

***CANDACE***

Lightning, fire, ice and elements that I had only read about in obscure tomes exploded and struck all around us. Energy pulsed, sending shockwaves across an expanse that was neither void nor realm. It was both. A world destroyed so utterly, that only a few bits of rubble floated in the nothingness – struck by the energies still left behind by Armageddon.

I fell throughout this non-world, narrowly avoiding the cracks of lightning bolts and the green fires of creation and obliteration.

I did not scream. What would be the point? There was no air to carry the sound of my cries. No one to hear them. I only watched and absorbed this impossible place. Until, suddenly, I stopped.

The Mentor stood by my side. He had formed a bubble around us, halting my endless descent. The primal bursts of elemental power became muffled. Distant. Yet, I saw them just beyond the shimmering confines of this fragile arcane container.

I fell to my knees panting, as I realised, I had not been able to breathe. Perhaps, my body had not even known it needed to breathe. That the rules of this realm didn’t make such a fact apparent. Would I have died? Or was this exertion only noticeable now that the Mentor had isolated me in a bubble with physical rules I was used to?

The Mentor allowed me to get my bearings. Finally, I stood and gazed out onto the ongoing apocalypse. Whatever had destroyed this place continued. Despite that there was nothing left to destroy.

I had always pictured the apocalypse as causing a wasteland, a field of graves. But this…there was nothing left. Not even a chance at survival.

“What is this place?” I finally asked, unable to hide the incredulity in my voice. It was getting harder and harder to channel Kat. The Darkness was strengthening through my proximity to my old Mentor.

“This, my student, was Asgard.”

“Asgard? But…”

It was one thing to see this impossible annihilation. It was another to give it a name. A name so recognisable and important to the history and mythology of my world.

Asgard. The realm of the Norse gods. The home of Odin, Thor and so many others. A realm that was no longer even reminiscent of a habitable world.

I had once thought that war was catastrophic, apocalyptic. And, perhaps, it was. But then, this is what came afterwards. A violent nothingness.

“What happened?” was all I managed to ask, as I tried to process this utter annihilation.

“You know the prophecy. You know Ragnarök. The end of the world. The foretold end of the Norse realms. The final clash between the gods and the hosts of Valhalla against their eternal foes. Not just the giants, but demons, spirits and the undead. A battle to end it all. Where the world-serpent, Jörmungand, will rise from the depths, the great wolf, Fenrir, will devour the sun, and Surtr will engulf the world in flames. You know this. All humans do. Even if they have never heard the words, it still resides within our bones and souls.
