“Very illuminating,” said Raszer, walking the journal back to Kane’s care. “I can’t thank you enough.”

“Il-lum-in-at-ing,” said Kane, eyes widening. “That’s the word, all right.” He opened his drawer, then froze, his right ear twitching. “Did you feel that?” he asked.

Raszer took note of a faint but persistent vibration rising into his bones through the soles of his boots. The ramshackle building gave out a groan. As the vibration swelled and hit his pelvic area, he felt a touch of nausea.

“That’s an HT, isn’t it, Mr. Powers?” Kane asked rhetorically. “Like some humongous snake slithering right beneath your feet.”

“Let’s hope not,” said Raszer, shaking off a shudder. He had no reference by which to gauge a harmonic tremor, but as Mathonwy had said, one wasn’t really required. You knew it as you knew the sensation of fear itself. Slowly, the contraction ebbed and the earth was released from its grip. He pictured Kane’s python slipping off between the boulders, its tail giving one last twitch.

“You be careful up there, Mr. Powers,” said Kane.

Raszer nodded tightly, then left and drove the six miles to Professor Mathonwy’s outpost.
