What the fuck were they looking for?
Sitting alone in his cabin, his mind raced with potential mistakes. Did he leave something behind that would incriminate him? He never used to worry about it in the past, as escaping was easy, but now he was trapped. He could take the path, go to the village, and steal a canoe. Or, once the weather broke, he could take one of the lodgeâs boats and run for it.
Okay, calm down. Letâs not panic.
He sucked in a deep breath and released it. Like an old movie, his mind replayed each capture, confinement, murder, and disposal. When he captured the pretty little housewife, he wore gloves, and the rain would have washed away anything on his jacket that pointed to him. When he played with her and finally ended her life, he couldnât remember anything to be concerned about. Submerging the body in the rough water would have washed away any traces of evidence. He smiled, and a calmness came over him.
As he shut his eyes, the second movie rolled in his mind. He had been careful with the nosy bitch, but his breath caught suddenly. He recalled one thing that was different with her. Sheâd head-butted him when he leaned in, so Jeffrey could taunt her. His nose had bled. It wasnât bad, but did he leave any of himself behind?
Fuck!
He jumped up and paced as he cursed under his breath. All these years of evading those chasing him. Heâd outsmarted them every time, even the intelligent detective in Boston. Most of those after him were bumbling idiots, but not him. He was a match for him, almost.
Okay, okay. You can fix this.
He reached under the floorboard in his cabin as he worked to slow his breathing and gain control of himself. After opening his book of treasures, he traced the tip of his finger along the small patch of skin. A warm calm washed over him.
Whatâs my plan?
A smile reappeared. He knew what to do.
