The Persian name for my lake, (deryāche ārām), means ‘Silent Lake’. Nassim says that as a young boy he used to trap birds there with his grandfather and sell them at the market in Kabul. He talks about a fantastical bird market, almost everyone here keeps one of these little animals in their house. His compatriots loved birds, but that certainly didn’t stop them eating them as well. The big species especially have been shot and eaten since the war started. Even the children have guns now, he says. The Persian name for the magpie is (perestu).

There are not five distinct species. Perhaps they died out a long time ago, or perhaps it was all a figment of Ambrosius’s imagination.

I tell Nassim that I intend to climb over the Hesco walls and run to the lake. I finally have a plan. I know the moment when I will take the risk. Perhaps I’ll meet up with Nassim there. He’s at the lake sometimes, I can see him from my tower. Most of the time he’s perched on the old wall of a fisherman’s hut, which was blown to pieces by the Russians and which is supposed to have belonged to his uncle.
