Chapter 16
EMMA
A day after Zoeâs death, I returned home to realise that Mum had cleaned the room. I sighed as I ran into my room for the hamper I had thrown my laundry into the previous day, fully aware that Mum would be angry and would nag if I didnât do it.
As I searched for it, I realised it was gone. Nobody else but Mum would have cleaned it up. I was surprised at how fast she got things washed, especially compared to me. Dirt and blood stains were not something that just went away with a simple wash.
âMum, you didnât have to wash my clothes. I was going to wash them,â I said with a tinge of guilt as I walked by her.
She didnât reply, not even a nod, and I felt my cheeks taint red. I wanted to wash those clothes myself; I didnât want her to do it. I wanted to get rid of the stains myself.
I wanted to get rid of the idea that Zoe was gone. I loved and hated my sibling, but she was my sister.
âAnd Mum, itâs probably best that you take some rest,â I added as I stomped through the room. Even with Zoe gone, she was still her priority. It was as though I was a ghost to her, and I tried to understand, but constantly feeling unloved was getting to me. Even her bed was well-made, and her things were properly arranged.
I guessed it was her way of keeping Zoeâs memory alive as if it were that easy to forget.
I searched for an empty transparent box thrown into the trash bin in our room. The package had held my present from Mum. It took her ages to agree, and only after fighting and overcompensation, like the need to get straight As in school. Even a promise to win a scholarship to university. The present was a scarf, which came as a shock to me.
There were so many hurtful things I had to hold on to, like her tantrums and how I had tolerated them. The strong ethanol and spicy scent she wore every time she returned after a night out. Those things were tolerable, but one thing wasnât. How close she was to Henry, my boyfriend. So close that one time, I saw him in the school assembly hall, leaning toward her as he gave her a kiss on the lips. I was dumbfounded and glued to the spot, watching them like my life depended on the scene playing before me.
With Henry, the only intimate moment we shared had been a kiss on my cheek, a shy one, as he was a shy boy, and heâd insisted we take baby steps. âKissing without matrimonial vows is a sin,â he said.
A sin, yet he took to the temptation of the serpent as wilfully as Adam, failing and falling into the hands of the temptress. Zoe.
Then again, could he be blamed? She had a way with people, as she could make even shy people like Henry open up.
