Thomas took a step after her but hesitated and walked back to the car where Quin waited.

Quin rolled down his window.

"What did she say?"

"That we failed to protect her before. Then she walked away."

Quin shook his head.

"What will she decide?"

"I don't know. Whatever she thinks is the right thing to do, and there is more than Colette to consider. Erin's still missing."

"I imagine she's dead."

"You would."

"Let me know if she stays."

"Maybe."

Thomas watched for a moment as Quin drove away. Should he go to her? He opened the door of his car. His phone was ringing.

Daniel. A jolt of fear hit his chest, and he gripped the wheel with his free hand.

"Yes?"

"Dad, the hospital called. They think she's getting worse and—"

"What do they mean by worse?"

Quin waved a hand as he turned into the street.

"I don't know. Less responsive, I think. They want to talk to you, to us, about resuscitation orders."

What was he going to do? What chance was there for her and what did the deterioration of the last few weeks mean?

"Did you mention that to the girls?"

"Yes. Cecilia exploded, but Claire is more reasonable."

"And you?"

"I don't know, Dad. What if we say no resuscitation and she could have recovered?"

"I'll be out to the house in a little while. And Danny, I hope Anne will come with me and I want her treated with respect."

"Okay, I'll tell them."

He needed to talk to Anne but would she even see him now. She was so angry, white with anger. He turned the key in the ignition. He'd go to Catherine's and try.
