When Mark Fletcher was heard speaking about a club, an undercover team was put onto it. The operation was set up and the undercover team waited in the apartment they had rented right opposite the house where the club was located. It was the early hours of the morning and the streetlamps cast a yellow glow on the pavements. The men in the apartment watched as a man in a business suit approached the door. His head was down and he was wearing a hat and clearly, did not want to be recognised.

A radio buzzed into action. ‘That’s the Education Minister approaching the door,’ the undercover cop said, ‘and they’ve let him in.’

Less than a minute later, another man approached. ‘Here’s our man,’ the undercover cop informed the team and they watched as the policeman, posing as a visiting businessman after a bit of action, was admitted. Mark Fletcher followed shortly after.

They listened as Brian, known for this operation as James Henderson of Henderson Recycling Ltd, was asked about his preferences. There were no questions about how he’d found the club – that had been established in his cover story before entry. George had taken a chance and they’d been told the undercover was an associate of the Education Minister. Knowing the minister’s reputation for his bad temper and for sacking employees that crossed him, George took a gamble that the minister would not be questioned about his so-called business associate. If he was, it was likely he would either reprimand the man who dared to question him, or he would admit to knowing such a rich man with a carefully built reputation. By the time the operation was over it wouldn’t matter.

James Henderson left the building less than an hour later, having successfully placed bugs in three rooms and the entrance area.

The day before Valentine’s Day was when the team got their lucky break. Mark Fletcher made a call about a shipment. It was via one of his burner phones and they only heard his half of the conversation, but that, together with the rest of the intelligence gathered, was enough to know that a ship was to leave the following night and would most likely contain human cargo.
