Five people were gathered around the table for the morning meeting and a run-through of the case. Wisting had seated himself at the head of the table, and Nils Hammer, Torunn Borg, Christine Thiis and Espen Mortensen had assumed their usual places.

‘Tore Bergstrand was in surgery yesterday,’ Wisting began. ‘A muscle in his leg has been badly torn. It’s a complicated injury. He’ll have to undergo several more operations, and there’s still a danger that amputation might become necessary. Maren Dokken is on sick leave for a fortnight. The rest will be back at work by the end of the week. They’ll be brought together for a debrief in the department tomorrow. Hammer and I will be there too.’

Hammer pushed his chair out from the table and squinted at the window before getting to his feet. ‘The sun,’ he grumbled as he skirted around the table to adjust one of the blinds.

Wisting gave a brief resumé of what had emerged in the course of the previous day. ‘There’s a lot of activity,’ he concluded. ‘But we still don’t have anything concrete.’

There was a knock at the door and it swung open immediately, although no one had answered. Adrian Stiller put his head round it, as if to make sure he had come to the right room, before closing the door behind him.

‘OK for me to join you?’ he asked, pointing at an empty chair.

‘We weren’t expecting you here today,’ Wisting said.

‘I’ve a meeting with Internal Affairs at noon,’ he explained as he sat down. ‘In many ways, we at the Cold Cases Group were the ones who set all this in motion. Who bear the blame, in fact, so I’d like to follow things up. If there’s anything we can contribute, I’d like to do that.’

‘Do you have any results from the surveillance?’ Hammer asked him.

He shook his head. ‘Lone Mellberg had a visit from a female friend last night and had a late start at work today.’

‘What about Floyd Thue?’

‘He hasn’t moved from his house. The only thing we’ve noticed is that he took delivery of a box of food at the door yesterday afternoon. He doesn’t socialize much, but he’s highly respected in financial circles. He’s a kind of anonymous philanthropist – earns a fortune on the stock exchange, but also spends a lot on financing social entrepreneurship and donating substantial amounts to non-profit purposes.’

‘His father was a paedophile,’ Hammer broke in, taking out his snuffbox.

The others looked at him in astonishment.

‘I’ve been doing a bit of digging too,’ he explained. ‘He was convicted several times. The first time for incest. Sexual abuse of his son.’

Stiller nodded in confirmation, but Wisting was unsure whether this meant he was in possession of the same details as Hammer.

‘He died in Ila prison,’ Hammer added. ‘Hanged himself in one of the cells there.’

Stiller nodded again. ‘We’re taking a closer look at his movements in the last few days and trying to find someone who knows him who can tell us more.’

‘He has a swimming pool in his basement,’ Hammer cut in.
