Chapter 9

When Colt called me later the following day to let me know that he might be late coming out to my place that evening since he had to meet with Chantriel after she’d completed her interview, I found Little Miss Jealousy rearing her ugly head once again. I tried to tell myself that my feelings were unjustified. For one thing, Chantriel was only in town until this afternoon, and there was a three in four chance that would be the end of her stay. For another thing, Colt had never done a single thing that would make me believe he was interested in renewing his relationship with the beautiful woman with the chestnut hair. Although things might look different if the woman was actually hired for the job she was in town interviewing for.

“Abby, are you here?” Georgia called from the living area of the cottage we shared.

I’d been working on my manuscript in my bedroom, so I called out that I was home and would be out in a minute.

“What’s up?” I asked Georgia, who was making a pot of coffee.

“I finished up next door and wondered how things went this morning.”

Calista had asked Georgia, Jeremy, Nikki, and me to film the opening scene that morning using simple to manipulate cameras provided by the show so Peppa and Nori could get things set up in town.

“It went fine,” I answered. “I wasn’t really all that comfortable taking on the part of camerawoman, but the cameras Calista set up only required me to push a button and monitor. How’d your group do?”

“My group did fine. After Calista passed out the boxes, I was intrigued when she told each team to go up to their suite before opening them. I wasn’t sure what they’d find inside, but an old fashion puzzle box, a map, an encryption key, and a compass weren’t anywhere on my radar. Not in this day and age of GPS locators. Still, it was fun to see Lillian and Lola struggle to get the box open. Lola was really out of her element with that one, but Lillian had been a Nancy Drew reader when she was younger, and she remembered reading about a similar box. They managed to get the box open and read the encrypted message. For me, I think the hardest part was not helping. As soon as I saw the box, I had an idea of how to best attack the problem, but of course, our instructions were to simply man the cameras and otherwise remain silent and invisible. The sisters had to start and stop several times, which had me physically biting down on my tongue, but in the end, they figured it out.”

“I had Dierdre and Donohue, and they seemed to get the box open before I even figured out what they were trying to do,” I said. “I’m pretty sure they were the first ones out the door this morning.”

“They were,” Georgia confirmed. “I spoke to Calista, who told me
