Chapter Thirteen

“Fascinating.”

Edina couldn’t keep the awe from her voice while studying the 3D images projected on the wall. Together with a small team of local and visiting scientists, the authenticity of several shards of ceramics had been confirmed. Modern software solutions had made the process much simpler and faster than it had been when she’d been doing her master’s in Museum Studies.

The team was still working on a collection of brass instruments which would shed more light on the lifestyle and warfare of an ancient Bagumian tribe of warriors believed to be the ancestors of the royal family.

Next, they’d attempt to identify the original forms of all the broken pieces and digitally reconstruct them. This would help create replicas for sale at the planned exhibition next year.

She continued staring at the intricate designs on the teapot and cups still rotating in front of them. “It’s amazing how such tiny objects can reveal an entire legacy.”

“Indeed, Your Royal Highness,” the museum’s curator, Mrs Sauda, commented. “The restoration exercise will be time-consuming and expensive. We’re excited to have Asanti Foundation sponsoring the exercise.”

The mention of Kal’s organisation conjured a flush of unwarranted excitement. Her best efforts at ignoring it proved futile. She hadn’t seen much of him since their kiss in the woods. She’d believed him when he’d assured her he had no recording of them. She’d heard of the endless meetings that took up his days and confirmed his personal business interests in Bagumi. The knowledge had caused a flood of relief and quashed the remnants of her reservations.

“Did you know he’s committed to matching any funds we raise at the end of every year for the next decade?”

She hadn’t known. “Really?”

“Handsome and generous,” Mrs Sauda said with a girlish giggle despite being over fifty.

The last comment set her mind rolling, toying with the idea of pitching Umaasie to him. An investment from his company could do wonders for the economy of a tiny nation like hers.

Yet, the pep in her heartbeat at the notion of hosting him in her home signalled danger.

She should discard the idea. She didn’t need any more exposure to him than required during the time they were both in Bagumi. It would be in her own interest to avoid him as much as possible until he left. Once the necessary formalities had been dealt with, she didn’t expect him to be involved in the nitty-gritty of planning the exhibition.

Why did the thought displease her?

She blinked, barely catching the last bit of the curator’s remark. “I’m sorry, Mrs Sauda, I drifted off for a moment.”

“No need for apologies, Princess Edina. I’m sure you have more important things to think about than Mr Asanti’s looks.”

Edina laughed at the faint blush colouring the other woman’s cheeks. Thank God for her own dark complexion, which did a better job of masking her emotions while a wave of exhilaration flowed through her.

They spent some time discussing ideas for the exhibition. As a curator herself, she shared her experiences and strategies she’d used in boosting tourism and getting wider public interest locally and internationally.
