VIII

When Spencer shook me awake; it didn’t feel like I’d been unconscious at all. My head felt sore and my mind groggy, but I had no sense of time that passed between turning to Sarah and opening my eyes.

“Did you get rolled by a prostitute?” Were the kind words Spencer had for me.

“What time is it?”

“11:30,” he told me. “Sunday morning.”

“Fuck,” is all I could think of to tell him how that made me feel.

My brother let out a little laugh, “She tore through your room pretty good too. I didn’t put it together with the turned over cushions and open cupboards until I came in here. I thought you just had wild sex out there and then got the munchies.”

“Can you not talk anymore?” I was on the floor in front of my desk; lying in the spot I last remembered standing. Practically everything from my desk was now scattered on my floor. The desk, dresser, and bedside table drawers were emptied and overturned. My sheets were stripped, and the mattress was propped up on an angle against the wall. The open closet looked like a bear had rummaged through it.

Spencer left the room to get me some medical attention. Aside from being a fan of kitchen tools, our mother was also a nurse. Thanks to her, my home always has a stock comparable to a small hospital. The sad thing was how often I needed it.

Spencer came back with a cold pack, a glass of water, and a Tylenol-3 from my stash. He handed me the pill and the water and dropped the pack beside me.

“So that was Sarah Enns?”

“Yes, it was.” I nodded and popped the chemical bladder in the cold pack so its temperature would drop.

“Was she worth it?”

Despite the throbbing pain in my head I wanted to immediately say yes. I said, “We’ll see,” instead.

“Is she your criminal?”

“This makes for a convincing argument. I just need some evidence to back it up,” I pressed the ice-pack to my temple and it felt amazing, “Preferably some of the non-personal kind.”

“Well, no matter how well she rode you, I thought you’d be up by now. So, you’re welcome. I’m heading down to the club now; I gotta say, I’m really liking my new commute. Come down if you need anything.”

“Thanks.”

He left and I collapsed back down to the floor. I laid there with the cold pack firmly pressed to my head for almost half an hour. I hadn’t felt like much of a sucker since Anna left. As much as I wondered why Sarah seduced me or whether she really felt anything, what I really wanted to know was what she was looking for.

She really was too good to be true. She probably didn’t even own a motorcycle.

Once I found the strength, I dragged myself into the bathroom to survey the damage. There was a red and purple welt surrounding my temple and I had the beginnings of a black eye. It could have been worse. I’d had concussions before and this didn’t feel like one, or at least not a major, lasting one.
