Chapter Nine

Brooke had always loved her studio. She loved the brick wall, the large south-facing windows that bottled all the sunlight in the room, and how the air smelled like old wood and paint. She loved her studio even more when she woke up feeling eager to get out of her comfy bed and get to work so inspiration could be brought to life.

Recently, she’d had a wealth of inspiration pooling inside her, ready to drip onto the canvas as bold colors and beautiful brushstrokes. She stopped to get her everything bagel and chai latte, and once her stomach was satisfied, she was ready to take on the Teresa Rosario piece. She put her earbuds in, turned on her favorite playlist, and got lost in the canvas.

In two long days, Brooke had finished Teresa’s piece. Dots of paint stained her hands and arms like a sleeve tattoo, and her button-up shirt looked like she’d mistaken it for the canvas. Her back and butt ached from sitting for so long, but it was absolutely worth it, like being sore from an amazing workout.

She admired the piece from the other side of the studio. It had turned out better than she’d thought it would. Sure, the mini she’d sent to Teresa to make sure she liked the concept had offered a tiny preview. But when it was on a twenty-by-thirty-inch canvas, Brooke stared for a good ten minutes, uninterrupted, as if she’d never seen the piece before.

God, she’d done really well, and even patted herself on the back for a great job. She couldn’t take her eyes off it, which meant something because if she couldn’t admire her own work, how did she expect others to?

She snapped a picture of her new paint baby, and she surprised herself because the first person who popped in her head to share it with was Arlette.

That feeling hadn’t happened since college. She lowered her phone and sifted through the emotions running wild in her. Part of her was nervous that after finally getting answers to her questions just days before, she was quick to let the excitement that came with Arlette’s charm lower her guard. She wanted to let Arlette in despite the fact she had told Abby and Stephen that wouldn’t be the case.

Should I even send this…yes…yes, I should. She’s the reason I have Teresa Rosario as a client anyways.

She texted Arlette the photo first.

Arlette responded within a minute. Wait. Is that Teresa’s painting?

Brooke pressed her lips together and smiled. The feeling of having Arlette’s full attention caused her to slide in her chair and forget about everything else. She texted back, Told you the museum would help inspire me.

Holy shit, this is GORGEOUS, Brooklyn!

Brooke allowed her smile to grow. She sent her mom a text as the heat swept across her cheeks, but her mind didn’t allow time to soak up her mother’s shining approval when Arlette’s still had ahold of her.

Brooke responded, You think she’s going to like it?

Absolutely!

When Teresa Rosario
