In this way the basic text becomes gradually surrounded with the work of scholars over several generations, often quoting, agreeing or disagreeing with each other, each keen to probe and analyse from their own perspective in an attempt to get to what is really being said.

Although these comments are not read as part of the synagogue service (in the way that the Torah and Haftarah are read) they are retained for use in private or public study and some have become so ‘hallowed’ in use that they are almost accepted as authoritative too. (One hears for example the phrase ‘Chumash-with-Rashi’ pronounced almost as one word, as though Chumash without Rashi’s commentary would be somehow defective!)

A modern equivalent could be a Website page which includes many links — these links are not actually a part of the text on the website page, but they provide further information, confirmation, observations which enrich the reading of the basic text.

Such a ‘Rabbinical Bible’ (known in Hebrew as a ‘Mikra’ot Gedolot’ or ‘A Large Anthology of Readings’) is illustrated here. What do we have? As just one small example, a selection of interpretations based on the first verse of the Book of Exodus.

Let us explore how it works.
