CHAPTER 14 Faith:

We stayed up all night, doing the kind of talking that involves words, kissing, and laughter all mingled together.

I’d woken up late because of that. I knew, the minute I opened my eyes, that I had to get going so I wouldn’t be late to brunch. There’s nothing my mom and dad hate more than people being late, unless it’s someone being late for one of our family get-togethers and brunch is sacred business in my family.

Even knowing that I hadn’t been able to resist having sex with Amy again before fleeing for home to shower and change. I slide into the driveway and give the clock on my dash a quick glance. I’m five minutes late but five minutes is five minutes and dread joins the anxiety already perking through my system.

The house looks like it always does. It’s a two-story, all brick affair set back on a wide sweep of carefully-mowed lawn and with pretty flowerbeds arranged under the wide and tall front windows.

The place is five-thousand square feet of gloss and shine. Everything sparkles. The windows, the opaque-frosted front door, the red-brick, the flowers in the beds. Even the fucking steps up to the low and wide porch glitter a bit thanks to whatever they were made with.

I know that the interior will be perfect. Mom has a housekeeper for both days and evenings because God forbid a single stray plate or crumb or wrinkled fabric should show its face in her domain.

I don’t want to be here. I don’t. I know Mom’s invitation was really an order, that there was no way to back out gracefully. Hope and Charity will already be inside, cooing over their kids and husbands and helping Mom to make sure that every single flower on the table is set just so into their vases.

Brunch will mean sitting there listening to whatever they have to say, fielding questions about my life, and smiling even though all I want to do is scream.

I make myself get out of the car and head up the walk that leads me to the steps then up on the porch. The door flies open and Mom, wearing a splendid set of white linen pants, a blue silk blouse with short sleeves, and a smile, says, “There you are Faith! I was beginning to wonder if you were going to hold up brunch.”

God Forbid that too. I force a smile. “Sorry, there was an accident and I had to crawl through the traffic.”

“Oh no! Well, I’m just glad you got here mostly on time even with that.”

Emphasis on the mostly. Now I’m angry for the fantasy people in my mythical accident. What if they’d died? Would it kill her to ask if everyone was all right? I know that’s crazy, to feel that way, but I do.

I follow Mom through the foyer with its double height ceiling and windows sending light in every direction. The open-concept living and kitchen burst into view, all gleaming white-and-gray granite and tile and old oak hardwood floors.
