“I knew it!” God declared. “Case closed!”

“Closed case!” DeeDee barked.

“What do I do? What do I do?” I asked worriedly. Griswald had never given any instructions about what to do if we actually caught someone in the act. “Should I call the police? Should I try calling Griswald? Am I supposed to call Wolfe?”

“You should breathe,” God suggested. “And wait for Nat. He’s the pro at stolen stuff. Follow his lead.”

I nodded. “Good advice.”

“Advice good!” DeeDee confirmed.

We sat there; our six eyes laser-focused on the door of the pawn shop.

“What do you think is happening?” I murmured aloud.

“Magnifying glasses are out. Wikipedia pages are being perused,” God replied. “No doubt, not wanting to miss out on a good deal, the reputable owner is calling in an expert acquaintance, who just so happens to be in the area, to authenticate the egg.”

I shook my head. “You really watch too much tv.”

“What do you think is happening?” he shot back.

“Haggling,” I muttered. “It’s what always happens. Haggling and one-upmanship.”

“Maybe in the—” God began.

“Nat!” DeeDee barked excitedly, drowning out the lizard.

Nat jogged toward the car. I leaned over to push the door open for him.

He slid inside.

“Should we call the cops?” I asked.

He shook his head.

“Why not?”

“Because it’s a fake.”

“What’s a fake?”

“The egg.”

“Carter’s trying to pawn a fake Fabergé?” I asked, dumbfounded. “Why?”

He shrugged.

“Am confused I,” DeeDee panted.

“We all are,” God told her. “What on earth is going on?”

“You’re sure it’s a fake?” I asked Nat.

“Did the butler strike you as a stupid man?” was his response.

“No.”

“Well, only an idiot would try to pawn a Fabergé egg.” Nat leaned back in his seat, scowling.

“A fence!” God exclaimed. “You’d need a fence for something that valuable.”

I sat back in my seat. “We have to tell Griswald about this.”

“I already texted him,” Nat revealed. He glanced at his phone. “No response.”

“They probably have him doped on pain killers,” I muttered. “Even if we could get in touch, there’s no guarantee he’d be lucid. We should—”

I never finished my sentence because, suddenly, Nat was kissing me. Or, at least, his mouth was pressed over mine, silencing me. I tried to push him away, but he’d pinned both of my arms.

Strangely, I didn’t panic. Maybe because I sensed no desire or violence in him. Maybe because I’d so recently declared I trusted him.

DeeDee, however, reacted differently. “Protect?” she growled.

“Do not protect, DeeDee,” God ordered sharply. “Absolutely do not.”

Nat eased off me slightly. “Sidebottom,” he whispered. “Don’t move.”

“He’s right,” God said from the dash. “Sidebottom just walked past.”

I gave a slight nod, signaling my understanding.

“The danger is outside the car,” the lizard told the dog. “Nat will not hurt Maggie.”

I sensed the dog’s slow retreat.

“Mister Lloyds of London is talking to two men.”

I tilted my head to the side slightly, so I could peer past Nat’s massive shoulder. “He’s talking to a couple of guys just outside the store entrance,” I whispered.

Nat leveraged himself away from me slowly. We watched Sidebottom conferring with the men in suits.

“Cops,” Nat said softly.
