Chapter Fifteen
When I returned to the B&B, Armani was about to embark on a spending spree. Flanked by Aunt Loretta and Marlene, they were followed by Templeton, whoâd gotten roped into playing chauffeur and package carrier. He didnât look happy.
âYou know we donât have a lot of storage space,â I warned, hoping to save Templeton some labor. âDonât go buying the entire housewares department.â
âWardrobe and makeup.â She tossed her shampoo-commercial-worthy hair for emphasis.
âWeâre all going to get makeovers.â Loretta batted her false eyelashes for emphasis.
âHow exciting,â I replied drily.
âYou should join us,â Marlene suggested. âA girlâs day will be fun.â
That was definitely not my definition of fun, but I kept that to myself. âCanât,â I answered.
âYou should,â Armani urged.
âIâve got private stuff to do,â I told her pointedly.
âOh.â She nodded her agreement. âYes, do that instead. But do you think youâll be available to go property hunting in a couple of days?â
I shrugged noncommittally. I didnât exactly relish the idea of chauffeuring her around to look at houses, but if it got her out of the B&B faster, it would be worth it.
I waved them off, got the animals resettled in the basement, took a shower, and returned to the remains of Armaniâs home.
Jack Stern, wearing his leather jacket, was surveying the debris. He smiled when he saw me pull up.
He walked over to my car, so I lowered the window. âMs. Lee.â
âSo formal today?â
âWell, I was going to ask for an on-the-record statement,â he admitted.
I shook my head and pantomimed zipping my lips closed.
Bending down, he rested his forearms in the window and gave me his most charming smile. âWhat about the interview with Armani?â
Flustered by his flirtatiousness, I gulped. âSheâll do it.â
âIs she shaken up about this?â He jerked his chin in the direction of Armaniâs decimated home.
âWouldnât you be?â
âNot too much. Iâm a rolling stone. I donât have roots. Iâm not into material things,â he said with a wink.
âExcept your jacket,â I teased.
He shrugged. âWe all have our vices.â
âWe do,â I agreed.
He leaned a little closer, pinning me with his dark gaze. âSo, can I ask you an off-the-record question?â
I nodded slowly. âAs long as I can still plead the fifth.â
âYouâre talking to a reporter, not testifying in a court of law,â he reminded me with a smile. âHave you figured out what the Licksâ involvement in all of this is?â
I shook my head.
He stared at me, trying to determine whether I was telling him the truth.
âI swear,â I told him earnestly.
He nodded. âMe neither, and itâs frustrating as hell.â
âWe should go stake them out,â I suggested.
âThe Licks?â he asked, looking alarmed. âThatâs a bad idea. Theyâre dangerous.â
âI thought you were the brilliant, fearless crime writer,â I challenged.
âPart of my brilliance is not doing things that could get myself killed.â
I shrugged. âCanât blame me for trying. Somebodyâs got to figure out why Armani is in danger.â
âThe cops are on it,â he assured me.
I rolled my eyes.
He chuckled. âHave dinner with me tonight?â
Surprised by the out-of-nowhere request, I blinked.
