Bonita felt an icy shadow chill her back as she walked home from school. She pivoted on her heels and walked backwards and, between the breaks in the sidewalk, she gathered information. He was a thirtyish man with a modest beard, dark blond ponytail, a light blue polo, and blue jeans. His eyes focused on her. They rolled down and up, taking in her presence from thirty feet away.
She stopped to see what he would do. She shuddered in pulses as if a live wire poked her. When he folded his arms and glared, she balled her fists and drew them near her temples. They came down hard. Why did Daddy tell me, âif you act unafraid, you wonât be afraidâ, and not show me how to act unafraid? She tensed and looked at the ground. She smiled sadly and looked at the sky. How could I do that? Iâm so sorry, Daddy. She turned and resumed her walk.
How had it slipped her mind? Hadnât he gently poked her head and said the answer was in there? Bonita, if I showed you what to do in every situation, I would spend the rest of my life next to your side. Youâve got what it takes in your brain to figure out what to do. If you ever get stuck, come to me and weâll talk. Okay?
Once, sheâd overheard Mommy and Daddy talking. Daddy had been jogging and a growling, teeth-bearing dog had chased him. I waited for the right moment and dashed across the street. Do you know what that dog did? It froze right there in the street where Iâd left the curb to cross. Man, was that driver angry.
Bonita looked back. He was still following, closer now. Quick. All it would take is a mad dash across the road. If only traffic would pick up. The prospects didnât look good and the few drivers seemed to be going out of their way to obey the low speed limit.
In time, a few speeding cars will come along, two young guys playing chicken. She saw herself clearing the first car and getting to the other side of the street. In less than a second, he would follow. At a point below his center of gravity, the second car would collide and break him. He might become road kill, but he started it. What else can I do to be free of this creep?
Should she sacrifice her health? She was fine standing on the sidewalk. For now. Sheâd gotten some distance ahead of him so that she could see him in her peripheral vision when she turned her head slightly. From time to time she would lose him briefly. When she looked over her shoulder to update his position, heâd vanished. She turned around and scanned the sidewalk and everything twenty feet on either side of it. He was gone and she continued walking to safety.
Heâd stalked her for about ten minutes and it felt like eternity. All she could do was hope someone would notice what was going on and intervene.
